48 hours to write, shoot and edit a short film: Mark Ruppert tells us more on “48 hour film project”

Mark Ruppert created the 48 Hour Film Project in 2001 and his concept is taking off all around the world : it will take place in 60 cities this year. 3000 films have been produced since the beginning and an additional 1 500 films just this year.The concept is to write, shoot and edit a short film in 48 hours. Teams meet on friday night, discover the brief and return on sunday night with a finished product. I met him while he was on his way back from Cannes where 16 of his films were shown. Revenues for “48 hours film project” combine the US 125 $ entry fee, revenue share on distribution and sponsorship on the festival.

On sunday June 10th, 2007, the winners of the “Defi Canon” were disclosed at the Elysée Biarritz, a movie theater on The Champs Elysée in Paris. These 11 films, shot by the best teams from the last 2 Paris competitions, were part of this Challenge. The theme was the environment, but each team had to shoot it on a different “genre” : thriller, humour, horror etc. You can see the making off, shot by Canal+, and broadcasted during from Daphné Roulier’s weekly show on May 12th..

The winnng film, which you can see below, is Ra : a fiction (hopefully) describing a situation : no more water on mother earth. Râ, from Minus & Cortex team (see their other productions) won 2 awards: Best Film and Eyeka’s public best film.
